What is Personal Development?

Families, schools and the community have avital role in preparing children and young people to negotiate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly complex world. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. Personal Development helps students to deal with real-life issues. It covers the social, health and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes including relationships. It supports students to be healthy (mentally and physically), safe (online and offline) and equipped to thrive in their relationships, careers and future.

Why is Personal Development Important?

Contributes to physical and mental health and wellbeing.
Contributes to the safety and protection of children and young people, from staying safe online to understanding risks in real life.
Contributes to the information young people need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds.
Promotes character including independence, resilience, responsibility and confidence — thus preparing children and young people for adulthood.
Promotes equality of opportunity within an inclusive environment.
Supports aspirational and relevant further educational and career choices

Our whole school approach promotes effective relationships between all members of the school community. Personal Development education contributes to supporting children and young people to build their personal identities, confidence and self-esteem and understand what influences their decisions. Developing self-understanding, empathy and the ability to work with others helps our pupils to enjoy healthy and productive relationships in all aspects of their lives.
